ZHGAS Technical Expert Researcher Bao Shaolin Invited to 4th Gasification Ash/Slag Resource Utilization Technology Symposium

From July 22 to 24, 2024, the 4th Gasification Ash/Slag Resource Utilization Technology Symposium co-organized by the Industrial Solid Waste Network, Institute of Process Engineering (CAS), and Institute of Engineering Thermophysics (CAS) was held in Yulin, Shaanxi. Bao Shaolin, Technical Support Expert at CAS Hefei Gasification Technology Co., Ltd.(hereinafter ZHGAS), was invited to deliver a keynote report titled "Key R&D and Engineering Applications of Gasification Ash/Slag Incineration Technology".

Bao Shaolin graduated with a B.Eng. in Thermal Engineering from Tsinghua University (1986) and an M.Eng. in Engineering Thermophysics from the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics (CAS, 1989), where he continued his research. With over 30 years specializing in Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boilers, he has collaborated with leading manufacturers (e.g., Shanghai Boiler Works, Wuxi Huaguang Boiler) to develop CFB boiler series (75–480 t/h), accumulating extensive R&D, operational, and design expertise. Recently, his focus expanded to biomass CFB combustion and gasification residual carbon utilization, aligning with national energy-saving initiatives.

In his presentation, Bao detailed the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics’ research on gasification fine slag properties and engineering applications, highlighting projects like Linzhou Fengbao and Xinjiang Tianye. He emphasized that CFB gasification ash/slag already achieves **>98% carbon conversion in commercial operations, while ZHGAS and the Institute are co-developing efficient combustion solutions for entrained-flow gasification slag**—a critical challenge in the field.

Deepening "Dual Carbon" policies have made comprehensive utilization of gasification slag a bottleneck for industry advancement. Both entrained-flow and fluidized-bed gasification produce fine slag with substantial calorific value and carbon content. Harnessing unburned carbon can boost system-wide energy efficiency, economic returns, and environmental/social benefits.

As a leading industrial enterprise under the CAS "Hongguang Initiative", ZHGAS consistently aligns technological innovation with industrial demands. By integrating technologies, optimizing systems, and advancing engineering solutions, it bridges R&D and commercialization. Moving forward, ZHGAS and the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics will pursue a dual-track strategy to enhance coal utilization efficiency—transforming scientific achievements into productivity while accelerating green, low-carbon, high-quality development in coal chemistry.
