  On December 1st, the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), hosted a series of academic seminars for its "Innovative Interdisciplinary Team for Clean Coal Combustion and Utilization." Professor Wang Limin from the State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Complex Systems, Institute of Process Engineering, CAS, a distinguished member of the team, was invited to deliver a report titled "Large-Scale Direct Numerical Simulation and Statistical Analysis of Gas-Solid Flow." The seminar was chaired by Professor Wang Haigang, the team leader.

Professor Wang Limin from the State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Complex Systems, Institute of Process Engineering, CAS, a distinguished member of the team, was invited to deliver a report titled "Large-Scale Direct Numerical Simulation and Statistical Analysis of Gas-Solid Flow." The seminar was chaired by Professor Wang Haigang, the team leader.


Professor Wang Limin began by addressing multi-scale problems in complex gas-solid flow processes. He provided a detailed introduction to the fundamental governing equations for direct gas-solid flow processes based on the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM), as well as smooth transition immersed boundary treatment methods for complex fluid-solid coupling. Leveraging GPU parallel computing technology, he achieved the largest-scale direct numerical simulation of gas-solid systems globally, obtaining scale-independent direct simulation statistical results on traditional computational grids. Building upon this, he explored the influence of mesoscale structures on particle statistical properties, gas-solid interphase forces, and transport characteristics, providing corresponding constitutive relations and microscopic information for higher-scale discrete particle simulations and two-fluid models. He also presented specific application examples. Attendees engaged in a lively discussion with Professor Wang Limin on the application prospects, key challenges, and scope of use for direct numerical simulation of gas-solid flow.


Professor Wang Limin's research primarily focuses on mesoscale theories and methods for turbulent and particulate fluid systems. He is dedicated to exploring engineering turbulence models based on mesoscale scientific principles and developing rapid simulation techniques for particulate fluid systems within the Lattice Boltzmann framework. His expertise spans turbulence simulation, mesoscale science, computational fluid dynamics, fluidization, and multiphase reaction engineering. He currently serves as an Editorial Board Member for the journal Heat Exchangers. He has authored over 60 papers in prestigious journals such as Chem. Eng. Sci, Chem. Eng. J, and J. Comput. Phys. He has led numerous research projects, including key projects of frontier sciences research from CAS, projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), sub-projects of the 973 Program, and sub-projects of CAS Strategic Priority Research Programs.
